Daily Devotional: Still Standing — Hope & Renewal: Free Indeed, Freedom in Christ This July Fourth
“So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” — John 8:36
Reflection
Today, the country celebrates freedom. There will be fireworks and families gathered around backyard grills, kids chasing each other through sprinklers, neighborhoods filling up with the smell of summer and the sound of laughter. It is one of those days that has a way of making you feel like everything is, at least for a moment, as it should be. And there is something genuinely worth celebrating in the freedom that was fought for and handed down to us. We do not take it for granted.
But if we are honest, a lot of people celebrating freedom today do not feel particularly free. They are free in the ways that a country can make a person free, and still bound in the ways that only God can release. Bound by a past they cannot seem to get out from under. Bound by a habit they have tried to break more times than they can count. Bound by fear, by bitterness, by a version of themselves they have been trying to outrun for years. The fireworks are beautiful, but they do not touch that.
Jesus speaks to exactly that kind of bondage. The freedom He offers is not freedom from external constraint. It is freedom from the internal ones, the ones that follow us into every new situation, that show up even when the circumstances change, that make us feel like we are living in a smaller version of the life we were meant for. He came to set captives free. Not someday. Not after we have cleaned ourselves up enough. Now. Today.
Whatever you are carrying into this holiday weekend, whatever has had its grip on you longer than you want to admit, bring it to the One who actually has the power to release it. The freedom Jesus gives is not celebrated once a year with fireworks. It is lived every day, in the quiet decisions to walk away from what once held us, in the gradual discovery that the thing we thought defined us no longer has the last word. That is the freedom worth celebrating today.
What is one thing that has had its grip on you, whether a fear, a habit, a memory, or a version of yourself you cannot seem to leave behind, and what would it look like to lay it specifically at Jesus’ feet today and ask Him for the freedom He promises?
Prayer
Lord, on this day when we celebrate the freedom of a nation, we ask for the deeper freedom that only You can give. We think of the things that still have a hold on us, the patterns we keep repeating, the fears we keep feeding, the past we keep dragging into the present. We are tired of being bound by what You came to break. We receive Your freedom today, not as a feeling we have to manufacture, but as a gift You have already purchased. If the Son sets us free, we are free indeed. We choose to live like it. Amen.
