Hope & Renewal: Renewed Day by Day
“Therefore, we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.”
2 Corinthians 4:16
REFLECTION
The body keeps the score. That is something most of us figure out somewhere in midlife, when things start taking longer to heal, when the energy that used to be automatic now has to be managed carefully, when the mirror starts telling a story that the inside of us does not quite feel matches. Getting older is a strange and sometimes humbling experience. And grief and hardship age us too, in ways that have nothing to do with years. Some people carry twenty years of hard living in their faces by the time they are forty.
Paul is not being dismissive of that reality. He says outwardly we are wasting away, which is simply true, and he does not apologize for saying it plainly. But then he pivots to something that is equally, and more importantly, true: inwardly, we are being renewed day by day. Not once. Not in a single dramatic moment of spiritual experience. Day by day. Quietly. Continuously. In the ordinary life of a person who stays close to God.
Renewal is not always something we feel. Sometimes it happens beneath the surface of what we can detect, in the slow, invisible work of God shaping our character, deepening our roots, and building in us a resilience and a depth that only come through sustained faithfulness over time. The person you are becoming through the hard seasons is being shaped in ways that will matter more than you currently realize.
Tomorrow is the Fourth of July, a day when we celebrate freedom. And there is a kind of freedom that Paul is pointing to here that no government can grant and no circumstance can take away: the freedom of a soul that is being renewed from the inside out, that does not lose heart because it knows where its life is rooted. That freedom is available to every one of us, today, regardless of what is happening on the outside.
Where in your life do you most need to believe that God is doing a renewing work beneath the surface, even in a season where you cannot feel it or see it yet?
PRAYER
Lord, we do not always feel renewed. Some days, the outward wasting away is easier to notice than any inward renewal. But we trust Your Word over our feelings today. You are at work in us, beneath what we can see, quietly and steadily, that only You work. We choose not to lose heart. We choose to believe that what You are building in us through this season is real, lasting, and good, even when we cannot yet see what it looks like. Renew us today. Day by day. We are Yours. Amen.
