Daily Devotional: Living Word
The Word of God: A Lamp in the Dark
“Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light for my path.”
Psalm 119:105
REFLECTION
Have you ever been in a situation where you genuinely did not know what to do next? Not a small decision, but one of those crossroads moments where the stakes feel high and the path forward is completely unclear. Maybe it is a relationship that has reached a point of no return and you do not know whether to stay or go. Maybe it is a career decision that will reshape the next decade of your life. Maybe it is a family situation with no good options, just a set of hard ones. In those moments, most of us will look everywhere for guidance before we look to Scripture.
We call a friend. We google. We make pro and con lists. We lie awake running scenarios. We ask everyone around us what they think. And sometimes those things genuinely help. But there is a source of guidance that most of us underuse, not because we do not believe it works, but because we are not sure exactly how it works, because we have tried it before and felt like we did not hear anything, because it feels too slow for the urgency of what we are facing.
David wrote Psalm 119 as the longest chapter in the entire Bible, one hundred and seventy-six verses about the Word of God, and right in the middle of it he lands on this image: a lamp for my feet, a light for my path. Not a floodlight that illuminates everything at once. A lamp. Enough light for the next step, the one right in front of you, and then the next one after that. That is usually how God guides. Not all at once. Step by step, as we walk.
If you are in the dark about something right now, the invitation is not to figure it out before you open the Bible. It is to open the Bible and let the light come. It may not answer every question immediately. It may simply illuminate the next step. But the next step is all you need to take right now. And that is exactly what the lamp provides.
What decision or uncertain season in your life right now most needs the guidance of God’s Word, and what would it look like to bring that specific situation to Scripture this week with genuinely open hands?
PRAYER
Father, we are in the dark about some things. There are decisions in front of us that feel too big, paths that feel too uncertain, moments where we genuinely do not know which way to go. We bring those places to You today. Light the next step. We are not asking to see the whole road, just enough to take the next step faithfully. Your Word is a lamp. We are choosing to walk by it. Guide us this week. Amen.
