A New Chapter: From Life’s Challenges to the World of Fiction
Life has a way of taking us down roads we never expected to travel. Some lead to incredible opportunities, some test our strength, and others teach us lessons we could not have learned otherwise. As I begin a new chapter as a retired man and first-time novelist, I find myself looking back on a journey filled with accomplishments, unexpected turns, and challenges that have shaped who I am today.
My life has included opportunities I once could only imagine, including a shot at playing in the National Football League. Experiences like that teach you about preparation, perseverance, and pursuing something even when the odds are stacked against you. Along the way, I have also faced challenges that had nothing to do with athletic ability. Medical obstacles, including a battle with cancer, have given me a different perspective on what matters most and how quickly our priorities can change.
I don’t share these experiences because I think my journey has been extraordinary. I share them because life is a collection of moments that shape us, and sometimes the most difficult chapters teach us the most valuable lessons. How we respond to hard times is often just as important as the accomplishments we celebrate.
Now, retirement has opened the door to something new: storytelling.
I never imagined that one of my next chapters would involve writing novels. Yet an idea began forming in my imagination, eventually becoming “Magic Pretend: I’ll Meet You Again,” my first novel. What started as a story in my head grew into a world of characters, relationships, and emotions I could share with others. Writing has given me a new creative outlet and a chance to explore themes that have always interested me: love, friendship, human connection, and the things that make life meaningful.
Through this column, I’ll reflect on my accomplishments, the medical challenges I’ve faced, and the lessons I’ve learned along the way. I’ll also take you behind the scenes of my fiction writing, sharing the ideas and experiences that influence my stories.
This isn’t simply a look back at the life I’ve lived. It’s also about embracing what comes next.
Retirement doesn’t have to mean the end of ambition or growth. Sometimes, it is the beginning of an unexpected adventure.
For me, that adventure is just getting started. Welcome to my next chapter.
