Daily Devotional: Spiritual Warfare: Know Your Enemy

STAND FIRM

“Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.”
1 Peter 5:8

REFLECTION

Peter does not ease us into this. He goes straight to it. Your enemy, the devil, is real; he is active, and he is looking for someone to devour. That is not poetic language. That is a warning from someone who knew what it was to be targeted, who had been sifted like wheat, who had denied Jesus three times in a single night and lived with the devastation of that collapse. Peter knew what the enemy could do. And he did not want anyone else to be caught off guard the way he was.

  • The enemy is not omnipresent like God, but he is strategic.
  • He is not omniscient like God, but he has studied human weakness for a very long time.
  • He is not omnipotent like God, but he is powerful enough to require our serious attention.
  • And he does not fight fair. He targets the vulnerable, the weary, the isolated, and the proud.

Knowing your enemy is not about being obsessed with darkness. It is about being informed enough not to be blindsided. The lion does not announce its presence before it attacks. It studies the herd, identifies the weakest, the most distracted, the one that has wandered furthest from the others, and it moves. Peter says, be alert. Pay attention. Know your own vulnerabilities. Know the seasons and the circumstances in which you are most exposed.

But here is what Peter does not say: be afraid. The roaring lion is terrifying, but it is a defeated lion. The cross settled the ultimate outcome. Satan knows it. Which is why he prowls rather than conquers, why he deceives rather than overpowers, why his primary weapons are lies and discouragement and distraction rather than brute force. He cannot take your salvation. He cannot separate you from God’s love. What he can do is make you live as though he has already won, which is why knowing the truth about who he is and what he cannot do is one of the most powerful weapons available to us.

Where in your life right now are you most vulnerable to the enemy’s attacks, and what specific areas of weakness or isolation do you need to bring under the protection of God and the covering of community?

PRAYER

Lord, make us alert without being afraid. Help us to see the enemy’s strategies without becoming obsessed with his presence. We know that he is real and that he is active, and we know that he is already defeated. Remind us today of the truth that sets us free from his lies: greater is He who is in us than he who is in the world. Protect the vulnerable places in us. Draw us close to You and to each other. And let us live not as people who are prey, but as people who know who they belong to. Amen.
