REFLECTION

Sustaining grace is different from saving grace. Saving grace is the dramatic moment, the rescue, the before-and-after story. Sustaining grace is quieter. It is what shows up on an ordinary Thursday when you are not having a crisis and not experiencing a breakthrough; you are just getting through the day. It is the grace that keeps you going when nothing particularly inspiring is happening.

Isaiah describes a pattern that is worth paying close attention to. Morning by morning. Not once. Not in the dramatic moments only. Every morning, God wakes the ear to listen. Every morning, there is a fresh word, a fresh sustaining, a fresh supply of what is needed for that specific day. The manna in the wilderness was collected daily for a reason. Grace that is received fresh every morning is grace that keeps us dependent on the Giver rather than on our stockpile.

• On the mornings when you are dreading what the day holds, the sustaining grace is already there.
• On the mornings when the hard season has gone on so long you are not sure you can face another week of it, the grace is there.
• On the mornings when you have nothing left, and you are not sure where you are going to find what the day requires, the grace is there.

The practice that makes this real is not complicated but it is countercultural. It is the morning practice of turning toward God before the day gets started. Not out of religious obligation but out of honest need. Acknowledging before the first meeting or the first crisis or the first demand of the day: I need what only You can give today. And then receiving it. Morning by morning, faithful supply from a God who never runs out of what the weary need most.

PRAYER

Lord, thank You that Your sustaining grace is not rationed. That every morning You waken our ears to hear, every morning You supply what we need for that day, every morning Your mercies are new. We turn toward You this morning before the demands of the day get their hands on us. We acknowledge our need. We receive Your supply. Sustain us today, not just through the dramatic moments but through the ordinary, grinding, one-foot-in-front-of-the-other moments that make up most of faithful living. We need You. Amen.
