48 DUI Arrests in One Month: PCSO Says 11 Crashes, 4 ICE Holds Linked to Cases

POLK COUNTY, Fla. — The Polk County Sheriff’s Office says deputies arrested 48 people for Driving Under the Influence of alcohol and/or drugs during the past month, highlighting what Sheriff Grady Judd’s agency says remains one of the county’s most persistent public safety threats.
According to information released by the Sheriff’s Office, 11 of those DUI arrests were connected to traffic crashes, underscoring the danger impaired drivers pose not only to themselves but to everyone sharing Polk County’s roads.
One arrest involved a driver traveling with three juvenile passengers in the vehicle, a circumstance that can lead to enhanced scrutiny and additional charges depending on the facts of a case.
The Sheriff’s Office also reported that four of the individuals arrested were determined to be in the United States illegally and had ICE holds placed on them following their arrests.
Importantly, the 48 arrests represent only cases made by Polk County Sheriff’s Office deputies and do not include DUI arrests made by municipal police departments in Lakeland, Winter Haven, Bartow, Haines City, Davenport, Auburndale, Lake Wales, or by the Florida Highway Patrol. As a result, the total number of DUI arrests across Polk County during the month is likely higher.
A Continuing Enforcement Priority
DUI enforcement has long been one of Sheriff Judd’s most visible public safety initiatives. The Sheriff’s Office routinely conducts traffic enforcement details and frequently publicizes impaired-driving arrests, particularly around holidays and high-travel weekends. Previous enforcement efforts have resulted in multiple DUI arrests and ICE detainers being placed on some offenders.
The latest figures also highlight a recurring trend: a significant portion of DUI arrests involve crashes. While not every impaired driver causes a collision, the Sheriff’s Office says alcohol and drug impairment remain major contributors to serious and fatal crashes throughout Florida.
The Bigger Picture
The statistics released by PCSO serve as a reminder that impaired driving remains a countywide issue, not just a problem on major highways. Many DUI arrests occur on local roads and neighborhood streets where families, bicyclists, and pedestrians are present.
For residents, the message from law enforcement remains unchanged: if you see someone who appears to be driving while impaired, call 9-1-1 immediately. Early reporting can prevent a dangerous situation from becoming a tragedy.
