Polk County Road Closures Nov. 8-14: Which Roads Are Closed This Week in Lakeland, Winter Haven, Bartow and Davenport?

The single closure most likely to strand a Polk County commuter in the week ahead is in north Lakeland, where the westbound Interstate 4 on-ramp at Kathleen Road, Exit 31, is closed from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. every day and again from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday through Friday nights while crews replace the CSX railroad bridge over the interstate. The Florida Department of Transportation’s District One RoadWatch report for Nov. 8 through 14, posted Nov. 5, routes drivers north on Kathleen Road past the closed ramp, east on Griffin Road to U.S. 98, north on U.S. 98, and onto westbound I-4 at Exit 32.

This roundup covers the week ahead, Sunday, Nov. 8 through Saturday, Nov. 14, 2026, which matches FDOT’s own reporting week. The RoadWatch report posted at swflroads.com on Nov. 5 covers that exact week, so the listings below are current rather than carried forward. Where a day, an hour or a limit is missing from a listing, it is missing from the source document, and this story says so rather than filling the gap.

Interstate 4

At the CSX railroad bridge about 1,200 feet west of Kathleen Road, Exit 31 in Lakeland, crews are working at the Kathleen Road ramps as part of a project replacing a single 250-foot bridge with two 400-foot bridges, which clears the way for CSX double tracking and for a future widening of I-4. The westbound on-ramp closure runs 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily and 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. on Monday through Friday nights, with the Kathleen Road, Griffin Road and U.S. 98 detour posted. One caution on the hours: FDOT’s districtwide RoadWatch report gives the nightly window as 8 p.m. to 6 a.m., while the agency’s own Polk County RoadWatch page, updated Nov. 5, gives it as 8:30 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. This story uses the districtwide report, and The Citrus Tea News has not been able to resolve which is correct.

At the I-4 interchange with State Road 33, Exit 38 in Lakeland, the long reconstruction continues, with crews rebuilding the I-4 bridges over S.R. 33, widening and resurfacing S.R. 33, and adding wildlife crossings and noise walls. The item drivers need this week is Monday, Nov. 9, when crews switch traffic on S.R. 33 near the wildlife crossing with flagging operations in place. Through the rest of the week, single lanes on I-4 close nightly from 8:30 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. and double lanes from 10:30 p.m. to 6 a.m. On S.R. 33 itself, lane closures, flagging and periodic overnight detours run nightly from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., and detours for bridge work over the interchange run Monday through Friday from 9:30 p.m. to 6 a.m., sending northbound traffic by way of eastbound I-4 and State Road 559 and southbound traffic by way of Tomkow Road. The eastbound and westbound I-4 off-ramps at Exit 38 close as needed Sunday through Thursday nights from 9:30 p.m. to 6 a.m., and drivers who miss the ramp continue to Exit 33 and follow the signed detour back to S.R. 33. The report lists completion in summer 2029. It also still lists the State Road 659, North Combee Road, detour that began Aug. 10 for about 60 days, a window that closed in October.

On I-4 between Galloway Road and U.S. 98 in Lakeland, where crews are milling and resurfacing, rehabilitating concrete slabs and working on guardrail and traffic systems, the westbound off-ramp to State Road 546 closes for paving from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. on Thursday night, Nov. 12, with a posted detour.

U.S. 27

In Davenport, both directions of U.S. 27 between Ridgewood Lakes Boulevard and Holly Hill Road 2 have lane closures from 7:30 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. on Sunday through Thursday nights while crews continue drainage work and build a new median turn lane. A short distance north, at the Holly Hill Road and Massee Road intersection, FDOT reports that the new signal at U.S. 27 and Harrison Road remains in flash mode and is expected to go into full operation this week, which is the kind of change that catches drivers who have learned the old pattern.

In the Waverly and Lake Wales stretch, U.S. 27 from Cypress Gardens Boulevard to Hunters Glen has periodic daytime lane closures from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and nighttime lane closures from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. as crews build new turn lanes, and the report expects the work to continue through November. The report does not say which days of the week those closures fall on. At Live Oak Drive in Lake Wales, the southbound lane closes daily from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. through November while crews replace poles. The report does not name the utility doing that work.

U.S. 98 and U.S. 92

The U.S. 98 item with a hard date falls on the first night of the week. Between State Road 60 and County Road 540A in Bartow and Highland City, nighttime lane closures run from 6 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 8, to 5 a.m. Monday, Nov. 9, while crews install the new signal mast arm at Lyle Parkway. The U.S. 98 median opening at Lyle Parkway remains closed for the duration of the signal installation, and drivers continue to the next median opening and U-turn to reach Lyle Parkway. The broader project there involves removing and replacing asphalt, repaving side street aprons and installing new sensors at signalized intersections, with the Lyle Parkway work adding drainage, widened turn radii, a raised pedestrian pad, lighting, crosswalk striping and pedestrian signals.

North of Lakeland, the U.S. 98 widening from West Socrum Loop Road to County Road 54 produces the most sustained disruption of the week. Flagging operations near Rock Ridge Road run from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 8, and Monday, Nov. 9, and from 8 p.m. to midnight on Tuesday, Nov. 10. Daytime flagging at various points between West Socrum Loop Road and County Road 54 runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Nov. 9, through Friday, Nov. 13. The maximum speed stays reduced to 45 mph or lower throughout the project limits. The project is widening the highway to four lanes divided and adding roundabouts at Big Cypress Boulevard and State Road 471, along with utility relocation, drainage, crosswalks and shared-use paths from West Socrum Loop Road and Hall Road to just north of Rock Ridge Road.

Between south of Griffin Road and Sharon Drive in Lakeland, where crews are finishing punch list items on a project that covered milling and resurfacing, drainage repair, Pyramid Parkway improvements, high-visibility crosswalks, lighting, signal equipment, new northbound signs for the I-4 ramps and painted bike lanes, periodic nighttime lane closures continue in both directions, weather permitting. The report gives no days or hours for those.

One U.S. 92 item in the report falls outside this week and is noted here so drivers are not caught by it. Eastbound and westbound lanes near East Lake Parker Drive close from 10 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 19, until 5 a.m. Friday, Nov. 20, for overhead powerline maintenance.

U.S. 17 and U.S. 17/92

The resurfacing of U.S. 17 from north of Transport Road in Bartow to Avenue G Southwest in Winter Haven brings nighttime lane closures on Monday through Friday nights while crews place pavement markings, along with daytime shoulder closures. The report does not give clock hours for either. The project also covers sidewalk, curb and gutter, signal sensors and markings.

In Winter Haven, U.S. 17 from Snively Avenue and Lake Shipp Drive to north of State Road 540, Cypress Gardens Boulevard, has nightly lane closures on Sunday through Thursday nights, again with no hours published, while a permit project builds new driveways for the Target development, a traffic signal at the Chain of Lakes Complex and Target entrance, and a second left-turn lane from southbound U.S. 17 onto Snively Avenue. The City of Winter Haven has a separate alert still posted from Sept. 8 describing multiple lanes closed around the clock at U.S. 17 and Cypress Gardens Boulevard beginning Sept. 9. That alert carries no end date, and the city has not published one.

At U.S. 17 and State Road 540, Cameron Road, in Eagle Lake, Polk County is building the new alignment of Thompson Nursery Road, a four-lane collector between U.S. 17 and Rifle Range Road. FDOT reports no additional lane closures scheduled there this week because crews are working behind the barrier wall.

On U.S. 17/92 at Powerline Road, southbound shoulder closures run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. for widening and a new turn lane just south of Bargain Barn Road. The report does not say which days.

Lakeland

State Road 33, Lakeland Hills Boulevard, between Parkview Place and Griffin Road remains the city’s longest-running squeeze. Crews are working this week on signal conduit, drainage, limerock base and sanitary sewer as part of a reconstruction that also includes milling and resurfacing, curb and gutter, wider sidewalks, signal and lighting upgrades, and water and sewer upgrades for the City of Lakeland. One lane stays open in each direction for most of the project and the speed limit is reduced to 35 mph inside the work zone. FDOT’s districtwide report gives the limits as Parkview Place to Griffin Road, while the agency’s Polk County page and its project listing for 440444-1 give them as Parkview Place to north of Granada Street.

On State Road 37, Florida Avenue, from Windsor Street to Allamanda Drive, Lakeland Electric is replacing wire and poles and adding new poles, with northbound lane closures from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. through early December. The report does not list which nights.

State Road 539, Kathleen Road, north of I-4 is being milled and resurfaced, but FDOT reports no planned lane closures there this week because crews are working off the roadway.

Two city projects are also in the way. South San Gully Road has been closed to through traffic since Monday, Oct. 26, for the Western Trunkline Project, and Lakeland Water Utilities said in its Oct. 21 notice that the closure would last about two months, with a signed detour and digital message boards in place. The city’s notice does not describe the detour route. On Rose Street between Ingraham Avenue and South Lake Avenue, the westbound lane is closed with a detour in place while crews install a new storm sewer on the south side, work the city listed as beginning Oct. 12 and running about three months.

Winter Haven and Auburndale

Downtown Winter Haven loses a block of its main street for the whole week. The city’s alert center, posted Oct. 27, states that Central Avenue is shut down between 2nd Street West and 3rd Street West from Nov. 2 through Nov. 20, 2026. The city’s notice gives no hours, no detour route and no reason for the work. Daily Ridge reported on Oct. 28 that crews are connecting to water infrastructure under the road for the SouthState Bank downtown office building at 233 W. Central Ave., and that the sidewalk on the south side stays open for the full length of the closure, with north side access running from 3rd Street Northwest to Union Taproom Pizza and Kitchen. The city has not published those details itself.

Just outside downtown, Old Bartow Eagle Lake Road remains closed between the Spirit Lake Road and Sheffield Road intersection and Spirit Landings Boulevard. Polk County announced that closure on Oct. 15, said it would begin at 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 18, and put the expected reopening at 7 a.m. Monday, Jan. 11, 2027, with a detour by way of Crystal Beach Road, Thornhill Road and Spirit Lake Road. That closure is the third phase of work on the Spirit Lake Road and Sheffield Road intersection, and the county reopened the Sheffield Road segment west of that intersection at 1 a.m. Oct. 19, more than a month ahead of schedule.

The city also still carries an alert, posted May 25, closing 3rd Street Northwest from Avenue D Northwest to South Lake Silver Drive beginning Tuesday, May 26. It has no end date. A separate city alert posted Sept. 15 describes an emergency water line repair closing one lane, with the title naming U.S. 17 at Avenue D Northwest and the text naming 6th Street Northwest. The city has not reconciled the two.

On the state system, State Road 544, Havendale Boulevard, from Lake Blue Drive to 26th Street Northwest has eastbound daytime lane closures while crews build a gravity wall and sidewalks, part of a project adding a six-foot sidewalk on the south side, pedestrian signal upgrades, high-visibility crosswalks, milling and resurfacing of side street entrances, and reconstructed driveways, curb ramps and turning radii. The report does not list days or hours. At State Road 544, Lucerne Park Road, and Old Lucerne Park Road, crews are installing streetlight poles this week for a new traffic signal that FDOT expects to be operational in late fall. Until it is in service, drivers obey the existing signs, and the intersection is not a three-way stop: Lucerne Park Road traffic stops only when turning onto Old Lucerne Park Road. State Road 540, Winter Lake Road, at Thomas Wood Lane has nighttime lane closures from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. through the end of November for roadway stabilization and paving, with no days listed.

Auburndale has no city closure notices in effect this week. The city’s Veterans Day ceremony, held jointly with Lake Alfred, runs from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 11, at the Veterans Memorial Garden in downtown Auburndale, and the city’s listing does not include a street closure.

Bartow and southern Polk

The Fort Fraser Trail bridge over State Road 60 between Wilson Avenue and U.S. 17 continues to reshape how drivers reach the businesses on that stretch. The westbound left turn lane and median opening from S.R. 60 to Chick-fil-A are closed through early spring 2027, as is a single eastbound lane running from that median opening to the Walmart left turn lanes. The Walmart entrance is not affected, and westbound drivers headed to Chick-fil-A continue on S.R. 60 to Wilson Avenue and turn left. The trail itself is closed from the north trailhead just north of S.R. 60 through the south end on the south side of the highway, while the north end stays open. Crews this week are grouting piles, placing concrete, forming the backwall and column forms, and cleaning up.

East of the city, State Road 60 between Rifle Range Road and Alturas Road has eastbound lane closures from 8 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. through the end of November while crews work on storm drainage facilities in the median. West of Bartow in Mulberry, State Road 60 between Diesel Road and Kid Ellis Road has nighttime lane closures from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. through the end of November for cleaning and video inspection of the stormwater system. Neither listing names the nights.

The U.S. 98 work at Lyle Parkway described above also falls in this part of the county, with the Sunday night closure and the continuing median closure.

The smaller cities

In Davenport, East Boulevard South closes beginning Monday, Nov. 9, for the city’s stormwater improvement project, with detour signs posted and no detour route described. The city expects the closure to remain in place over the coming weeks. The notice on the city’s homepage contradicts itself on the western end of the closure: the headline reads from Maple Street East to Palmetto Street East, while the text reads between Cypress Street East and Palmetto Street East. The notice carries no posted date and no project contact, and it does not appear on the city’s own notices page.

In Lake Alfred, South Glencruiten Avenue between Mackay Boulevard and East Thelma Street has construction and partial lane closures for repaving, striping and traffic calming. The city posted that work on Sept. 29, said it would begin Sept. 30 and expected it to take about two months, and has not published an end date. On State Road 17, Scenic Highway, between Old Scenic Highway and State Road 544, crews pave overnight on Sunday through Thursday nights with flaggers directing traffic through the lane closures, and the report gives no clock hours.

In Dundee, State Road 542, Dundee Road, has southbound lane closures nightly from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. between Woodfern Drive and 17th Street Northeast for paving, and FDOT lists those closures continuing through Monday, Nov. 30.

In Lake Hamilton, the new traffic signal at State Road 17 and Kokomo Road is not yet in service, so the existing traffic control remains in effect and the intersection is not a four-way stop. On the same corridor between Kokomo Road and Chicago Avenue, crews are installing a new watermain and removing the old one along the northbound lanes from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday through the end of December.

In Polk City, the new signal at State Road 33, Commonwealth Avenue, and Mount Olive Road is also not yet active. Drivers obey the existing signs, and S.R. 33 traffic stops only when turning onto Mount Olive Road. Farther along Commonwealth Avenue, between Centerstate Logistics Park and Epicenter Boulevard, crews are working off the roadway with no lane closures scheduled.

Polk County’s news feed carried no road or lane closure posts in the past week, and the only county closure post still in effect for this week is the Oct. 15 release on Old Bartow Eagle Lake Road. Haines City’s two closure alert categories both read that there are no active alerts. No qualifying closure notices were found for Eagle Lake, Fort Meade, Frostproof, Highland Park or Hillcrest Heights, and no Veterans Day parade with a street closure was found anywhere in the county inside this week. Lakeland’s Veterans Day parade from the RP Funding Center to Munn Park falls on Saturday, Nov. 7, the day before this week begins.

Long-term projects

The Central Polk Parkway, State Road 570B, is the largest piece of road construction in the county. It begins at the Polk Parkway and Winter Lake Road interchange and runs about 6.5 miles to U.S. 17, costs about $257 million and is scheduled to stay under construction through 2029. The I-4 interchange reconstruction at State Road 33 is scheduled through summer 2029. The Fort Fraser Trail bridge lane and median closures in Bartow run through early spring 2027, and the Old Bartow Eagle Lake Road closure in Winter Haven is scheduled through Jan. 11, 2027.

The Polk Parkway resurfacing from west of Lakeland Highlands Road to south of U.S. 92, a roughly $20 million job that also repaved the U.S. 98 ramps, Lakeland Highlands Road and Winter Lake Road, is listed in the RoadWatch report with a completion date of mid-2026, which has passed. Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise project page for the same work says construction is expected to continue through 2026 and does not give a revised date.

Frequently asked questions

Which Polk County closure will cause the most trouble the week of Nov. 8-14?
The westbound Interstate 4 on-ramp at Kathleen Road, Exit 31 in Lakeland, is closed 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. every day and 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday through Friday nights, which takes the ramp out for most of the working day and most of the night. The detour runs north on Kathleen Road, east on Griffin Road to U.S. 98, then north to the westbound I-4 entrance at Exit 32.

What week does this roundup cover?
Sunday, Nov. 8 through Saturday, Nov. 14, 2026, which is the same Sunday-through-Saturday week FDOT District One uses in its RoadWatch report.

Which Polk County roads are fully closed, not just narrowed?
Old Bartow Eagle Lake Road in Winter Haven, between the Spirit Lake Road and Sheffield Road intersection and Spirit Landings Boulevard, through Jan. 11, 2027. Central Avenue in downtown Winter Haven, between 2nd Street West and 3rd Street West, through Nov. 20. Third Street Northwest in Winter Haven, from Avenue D Northwest to South Lake Silver Drive, with no end date published. South San Gully Road in Lakeland, through roughly late December. East Boulevard South in Davenport, starting Monday, Nov. 9.

Is anything closing on Veterans Day, Wednesday, Nov. 11?
No street closure tied to a Veterans Day event was found anywhere in Polk County for Nov. 11. Lakeland’s parade was Saturday, Nov. 7. County and city offices are closed and several garbage routes shift, including Dundee’s Wednesday collection moving to Thursday, Nov. 12.

Why do some listings give hours but no days, or days but no hours?
Because the source document does, and FDOT’s weekly report is the only published schedule for most of these corridors. Where a detail is missing here, it is missing there, and this story marks it rather than guessing.

Who do I call about a specific closure?
For state roads, interstates and the parkways, FDOT District One, Janella Newsome, (863) 519-2828, [email protected]. For county roads, Polk County Roads and Drainage, Michael Teate, (863) 535-2200, [email protected]. For city streets, call the city: Lakeland (863) 834-6000, Winter Haven (863) 291-5600, Davenport (863) 419-3300, Lake Alfred (863) 291-5270, Dundee (863) 438-8330.

Does Polk County keep a single list of all road closures?
No. The county posts closures as individual news items at polkfl.gov/news as they come up, and its Roads and Drainage page offers a closure request form and a road inventory map rather than a closure list. FDOT’s weekly RoadWatch report is the closest thing to a countywide schedule, and it covers only state roads.
