Polk County Road Closures Oct. 11-17: Which Roads Close This Week in Lakeland, Winter Haven, Bartow and Davenport?
This roundup covers the week ahead, Sunday, Oct. 11 through Saturday, Oct. 17, 2026. It is built from the Florida Department of Transportation District One RoadWatch report No. 41, issued Oct. 8, 2026, for the week of Oct. 11 to 17, together with closure notices from Polk County Government and the City of Lakeland. All dates and hours are as published by the agencies and are subject to change in the field.
The single biggest disruption this week is in Lakeland, where State Road 33 is closed in both directions at the Interstate 4 interchange at Exit 38 so crews can demolish a bridge. FDOT lists that closure beginning at 9:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 11, and running to 6 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 15, and directs drivers to follow posted detour routes. For the interchange work scheduled Monday through Friday from 9:30 p.m. to 6 a.m., the department names the detours: northbound State Road 33 traffic goes by way of I-4 east and State Road 559, and southbound traffic goes by way of Tomkow Road. Second on the list is a closure that has already been in place for a week and runs well past this one, with North Lake Parker Avenue shut at East Rose Street in Lakeland through Tuesday, Oct. 20.
Interstate 4
The I-4 and State Road 33 interchange reconstruction at Exit 38 in Lakeland drives most of the interstate work this week. Beyond the State Road 33 bridge demolition closure described above, the westbound I-4 off-ramp and on-ramp at Exit 38 are detoured for a traffic shift, and the eastbound I-4 off-ramp is detoured for striping reflectivity work, on the same schedule. Single-lane closures on I-4 itself run from 8:30 p.m. to 6:30 a.m., and double-lane closures run from 10:30 p.m. to 6 a.m. Lane closures and flagging on State Road 33 run from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. The eastbound and westbound Exit 38 off-ramps close as needed Sunday through Thursday from 9:30 p.m. to 6 a.m., with traffic directed to Exit 33. State Road 659, North Combee Road, has been detoured since Aug. 10 for a period FDOT described as about 60 days, using connections to State Road 33. FDOT puts the estimated completion of the interchange project in summer 2029.
At Exit 31 in Lakeland, the replacement of the CSX bridge over I-4 keeps the westbound I-4 on-ramp at Kathleen Road closed from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily and from 8:30 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. Monday through Friday nights. Drivers who want westbound I-4 are directed to continue north on Kathleen Road past the closed ramp, turn east on Griffin Road to U.S. 98, go north on U.S. 98, and enter westbound I-4 at Exit 32. That is the ramp closure most likely to catch a Lakeland commuter by surprise, because it closes in the middle of the day as well as overnight.
Between Galloway Road and U.S. 98 in Lakeland, eastbound and westbound nighttime lane closures and Kathleen Road ramp closures run from 8:30 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. Sunday through Thursday nights. Farther east, between U.S. 27 and State Road 655, coring operations close alternating lanes from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., work FDOT lists as continuing through mid-October.
U.S. 27
In Davenport, two separate jobs close lanes on U.S. 27 overnight. At Holly Hill Road and Massee Road, striping work closes the inside lanes northbound and southbound from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Sunday through Thursday nights, continuing through October. Between Ridgewood Lakes Boulevard and Holly Hill Road 2, drainage work and construction of a median turn lane close northbound and southbound lanes from 7:30 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. Sunday through Thursday nights. FDOT publishes no end date for the Ridgewood Lakes work.
In the Waverly and Lake Wales stretch, crews building new turn lanes between Cypress Gardens Boulevard and Hunters Glen close lanes from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. during the day and from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. overnight, with closures continuing through October. At Live Oak Drive in Lake Wales, a pole replacement closes the southbound lane daily from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. through October. Both of these are permit jobs by outside parties working in the state right-of-way rather than FDOT construction contracts.
U.S. 98
The heaviest U.S. 98 work this week is north of Lakeland, between West Socrum Loop Road and County Road 54. Lane shifts and flagging operations run on U.S. 98 from West Socrum Loop Road to north of Rock Ridge Road from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. on the nights of Sunday, Oct. 11 through Thursday, Oct. 15, with flagging on Rock Ridge Road at U.S. 98 during the same nights and hours. Daytime flagging runs periodically from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Oct. 12 through Friday, Oct. 16 at various points between West Socrum Loop Road and County Road 54. FDOT notes that the maximum speed limit remains reduced to 45 mph or lower throughout the project limits.
Between south of Griffin Road and Sharon Drive in Lakeland, punch-list work on a finishing project brings periodic nighttime and overnight lane closures in both directions, weather permitting, plus periodic daytime lane closures north of I-4.
In the Bartow and Highland City corridor, on U.S. 98 from north of State Road 60 to north of County Road 540A, the median opening at Lyle Parkway is closed while a new traffic signal goes in. Drivers who need to cross or turn there are directed to the next median opening to make a U-turn. FDOT lists no end date for that median closure.
U.S. 17 and U.S. 17/92
In Winter Haven, U.S. 17 work at Snively Avenue and Lake Shipp Drive north to State Road 540 brings nightly closures Sunday through Thursday, with northbound double-lane closures from 8:30 p.m. to 4 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 14 and Thursday, Oct. 15. The work covers driveway construction, a signal and a new double left turn.
The resurfacing project on U.S. 17 from north of Transport Road in Bartow to Avenue G Southwest in Winter Haven, which includes milling and resurfacing, sidewalk work, signal sensors, and striping, brings nighttime and overnight lane closures Monday through Friday nights for pavement markings. FDOT lists no end date for the markings work.
In Davenport, U.S. 17/92 from Palmetto Street to Market Street has northbound and southbound nighttime and overnight lane closures from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. through late October while a new turn lane is striped. On Powerline Road, lane closures run northbound and southbound just south of Bargain Barn Road from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. for road widening and a turn lane, with no end date published.
At U.S. 17 and State Road 540, Cameron Road, in Eagle Lake, Polk County is building the new alignment of Thompson Nursery Road, a four-lane collector between U.S. 17 and Rifle Range Road. FDOT reports crews are working behind a barrier wall this week with no additional lane closures planned.
Lakeland, Winter Haven and Auburndale
The closure most likely to strand a Lakeland driver outside the I-4 corridor is on State Road 700, North Lake Parker Avenue, which is closed at East Rose Street from Monday, Oct. 5 through Tuesday, Oct. 20 for drainage structure and pipe repairs. Lake Parker traffic is detoured by way of East Parker Street, North Ingram Avenue, and East Main Street. East Rose Street traffic is detoured by way of North Ingram Avenue, East Main Street, and North Gary Road.
On State Road 33, Lakeland Hills Boulevard, between Parkview Place and north of Granada Street, traffic has been shifted onto new lanes on the east side of the roadway, and one lane remains open in each direction for most of the project, with the work zone speed limit reduced to 35 mph. The west leg of the Lakeland Hills Boulevard and Parkview Place intersection is closed to through traffic around the clock for drainage and sanitary sewer work that began at 7 a.m. Monday, Oct. 5. Eastbound and westbound Parkview Place traffic is detoured by way of East Crawford Street and Merrell Drive. The Lakeland Regional Health ambulance entrance and the Watson Clinic driveway are accessible only from U.S. 98 during this work, which matters for anyone driving to either facility. FDOT puts the cost of the 1.13-mile project at $27.6 million and estimates completion in early 2027.
The City of Lakeland starts three jobs of its own on Monday, Oct. 12. On Rose Street, crews begin installing a new storm sewer system on the south side of the street, closing the westbound lane from Ingraham Avenue to South Lake with a detour in place, work the city expects to take about three months. At the intersection of East Lime Street and South Ingraham Avenue, crews replace all four sidewalk curb ramps for accessibility compliance, with lane closures and a flagging operation and pedestrian detours in place, expected to take about two weeks. On Kennedy Boulevard between Sleepy Hill Road and Williamstown Boulevard, crews install two sidewalk curb ramps under the same kind of lane closure and flagging arrangement, also about two weeks. The city does not publish daily hours for any of the three. A fourth city job that began Sept. 21, replacing damaged sidewalk and a bus stop pad in the northbound right-of-way of South Central Avenue from Olive Street to West Walnut Street, brings daily lane closures with flaggers and was described as about a month of work.
Elsewhere in Lakeland, State Road 37, South Florida Avenue, has manhole inspections between Main Street and Orange Street from midnight to 5:30 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 16. State Road 539, Kathleen Road, north of I-4, has nightly lane closures for milling and resurfacing, with no end date published.
A striping and maintenance job spans Lakeland, Winter Haven, and Auburndale this week, refreshing safety striping and thermoplastic markings with alternating nighttime lane closures from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. and flaggers on site, running through Oct. 28. It covers U.S. 92 from Wabash Avenue to Gary Road, State Road 655 and State Road 620 from State Road 540 to U.S. 92, and State Road 559 from Granada Road to C. Fred Jones.
In Winter Haven, work on State Road 544 continues on three fronts. At Old Lucerne Park Road East, crews are installing streetlight poles for a new signal, and FDOT says existing signs remain in effect until the new signals are operational, which it expects in late fall. Between Lake Blue Drive and 26th Street Northwest, sidewalk, crosswalk and driveway work brings daytime eastbound lane closures. The Havendale Boulevard sidewalk project has gravity wall and sidewalk construction this week with daytime eastbound lane closures. On State Road 655, Recker Highway, at Commercial Boulevard, a utility pole replacement brings periodic night lane or shoulder closures.
On State Road 540, Winter Lake Road at Thomas Wood Lane has nighttime closures from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. through the end of October for stabilization and paving, and Cypress Gardens Boulevard at South First Street has periodic night lane or shoulder closures for utility pole work.
Bartow and southern Polk
The Fort Fraser Trail bridge project over State Road 60 in Bartow carries the longest-running closures in this part of the county, and they are in effect all week. The westbound left turn lane and the median opening into Chick-fil-A are closed through early spring 2027, with westbound drivers directed to continue to Wilson Avenue to turn left. One eastbound lane from that median opening to the Walmart left turn lanes is also closed through early spring 2027, though FDOT says the Walmart entrance itself is unaffected. On Monday night, Oct. 12, crews will move a crane from the median to the south side of State Road 60 to pull pile casings and then move it back, work that affects the eastbound lanes only between 8 p.m. and midnight, in intervals of about 15 minutes per crossing. The trail itself remains closed from the north trailhead just north of State Road 60 through the south side, while the north end stays open. This week’s work includes pile driving, wall panel installation, and column and form work.
Also on State Road 60 in Bartow, between Rifle Range Road and Alturas Road, eastbound nighttime closures run from 8 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. through the end of October for median drainage work. West of there, between Diesel Road and Kid Ellis Road in Mulberry, nighttime closures run from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. through the end of November while crews clean and run video inspection on the stormwater system. On State Road 60, West Canal Street, between Northwest Fifth Avenue and Northwest Fourth Avenue, periodic night lane or shoulder closures are in place for utility pole work.
In Highland City, Third Street Southeast has been closed between Clubhouse Road and Central Avenue Southeast since 7 a.m. Friday, Oct. 2, for roadway reconstruction tied to a Final Site LLC project, and Polk County scheduled it to reopen at 7 a.m. Friday, Oct. 16. That puts it closed for the first five days of this week. The detour runs Clubhouse Road, Second Avenue Southeast and Central Avenue Southeast. The county notes that its dates and times are subject to change based on field conditions, and it had posted no extension notice as of Thursday.
The smaller cities
In Frostproof, State Road 17, Scenic Highway, between West Fourth Street and Bulldog Way has daytime lane closures from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and nighttime closures from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. through Oct. 30 while crews repair sidewalks, curbs and inlet tops.
In Lake Hamilton, crews are installing streetlight poles at State Road 17 and Kokomo Road for a new traffic signal that FDOT expects to begin operating in late fall, and existing traffic controls remain in effect until then. Between Kokomo Road and Chicago Avenue on Scenic Highway, water main replacement closes the northbound lanes from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday through the end of December. Starting Thursday, Oct. 15, Duke Energy begins utility work on State Road 544 from U.S. 27 to Lake Hamilton Drive with nighttime and overnight lane closures from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. running through Dec. 20.
On State Road 17, Scenic Highway, between Old Scenic Highway and State Road 544 and County Road 544, a milling, resurfacing, and rumble strip project has paving crews working at night Sunday through Thursday, with flaggers directing traffic through lane closures.
In Polk City, crews are installing streetlight poles for the new signal at State Road 33 and Mount Olive Road, with the signal expected to begin operating in late fall and existing controls in effect until then. On State Road 33, Commonwealth Avenue, between Centerstate Logistics Park and Epicenter Boulevard, final striping work brings nighttime closures from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Across the rest of the county, neither Polk County Government nor the municipalities posted a new closure notice this week affecting Auburndale, Bartow city streets, Davenport city streets, Dundee, Eagle Lake city streets, Fort Meade, Frostproof city streets, Haines City, Highland Park, Hillcrest Heights, Lake Alfred, Lake Wales city streets, Mulberry city streets or Polk City city streets inside this window. Polk County’s news feed carried no closure post touching Oct. 11 to 17 other than the Highland City item. No parade, festival, race, or stadium closure was announced for any Polk County street inside this window, though the OctoberFAST Fun Run 5K steps off at 8 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 17, from Fort Blount Park in Bartow and Main Street. Bartow’s Friday Fest is scheduled downtown the evening of Friday, Oct. 16, with announced street closures.
Long-term projects
Several Polk County projects will shape travel well past this week. The I-4 and State Road 33 interchange improvements and wildlife crossings project at Exit 38 in Lakeland has an estimated completion of summer 2029. The State Road 33, Lakeland Hills Boulevard, widening from Parkview Place to north of Granada Street is a 1.13-mile, $27.6 million job that began construction in October 2024 with estimated completion in early 2027. The Fort Fraser Trail bridge over State Road 60 in Bartow holds its turn lane and eastbound lane closures through early spring 2027.
On the toll road side, Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise lists resurfacing of State Road 570, the Polk Parkway, from west of Lakeland Highlands Road at milepost 8 to south of U.S. 92 at milepost 17, a roughly $20 million job the Oct. 8 report still describes as continuing through mid-2026. Construction of State Road 570B, the Central Polk Parkway, a new four-lane toll road running about 6.5 miles from State Road 570 and State Road 540 at Winter Lake Road to U.S. 17 and State Road 35, is listed as continuing through 2029 at a cost of about $257 million. The contact FDOT lists for both turnpike projects is Louis Grisoglio at [email protected].
