Daily Devotional: Perseverance & Endurance: Anchored in the Storm

“We also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.”
Romans 5:3-4
REFLECTION
Paul makes a claim in Romans 5 that sounds almost unreasonable the first time you read it. We glory in our sufferings. Not that we endure them. Not we survive them. We glory in them. Most of us read that and think: that is a nice idea for someone who is not currently in the middle of something genuinely hard.
But Paul is not describing a feeling we are supposed to manufacture. He is describing a perspective that becomes available when we understand what suffering is actually doing in us. He traces the chain:
- Suffering produces perseverance, the capacity to keep going under pressure.
- Perseverance produces character, the kind of depth and integrity that only comes from being tested.
- Character produces hope, not wishful thinking but the settled confidence of someone who has seen what God can do in the hardest places.
The chain does not start with glory. It starts with suffering. And it ends with hope, which is exactly the thing that makes the next storm survivable. Every time we endure something hard with our faith intact, something is built in us that was not there before. A resilience. A quiet certainty. A knowledge, rooted not in theory but in experience, that God was present in the last storm and will be present in the next one.
Glorifying in suffering does not mean pretending it does not hurt. It means choosing to see it as something that is doing something. The storm is real. But so is the anchor. And every time we stay anchored through a storm, the anchor goes a little deeper. The hope gets a little more unshakeable. The character gets a little more solid. That is worth something. That is worth quite a lot.
Looking back at a hard season you have already endured, what did it produce in you that you can identify now, and how does seeing that chain from suffering to perseverance to character to hope change the way you face what you are currently walking through?
PRAYER
Lord, we are choosing today to see our suffering differently. Not to pretend it does not hurt, but to trust that it is producing something. Perseverance. Character. Hope. We submit to the chain. We trust the process even when we cannot see the progress. Anchor us in the storm. Keep us from being driven off course by what is temporary. And let what is being built in us through this season outlast the season itself. Amen
