Daily Devotional: Healing & Wholeness: More Than Physical
This is an opinion column.
MADE WHOLE
“When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, Do you want to get well?”
John 5:6
REFLECTION
It seems like an odd question to ask a man who had been unable to walk for thirty-eight years. Do you want to get well? Of course he does. But Jesus asked it anyway, and the man’s answer is telling. He did not say yes. He explained why healing had not come yet, who had not helped him, and what obstacles had been in the way. After thirty-eight years, he had a very well-developed story about why he was still where he was.
Sometimes the longest-standing wounds are the most complicated to heal. Not because God cannot heal them, but because over time we develop a relationship with our brokenness that is hard to untangle.
- Our identity gets wrapped up in what we have been through.
- Our story becomes inseparable from our suffering.
- The wound becomes familiar in a way that wholeness is not.
- And healing, as good as it sounds, requires becoming someone we do not yet know how to be.
Jesus’ question was not cruel. It was kind. It was an invitation to want something different, to stop explaining the obstacle and start receiving the healing. And when the man stopped defending his situation and simply obeyed the instruction to get up and walk, something that had been impossible for thirty-eight years happened immediately.
Healing in Scripture is rarely only physical. It touches identity, it touches community, it touches relationship with God. The man at the pool was not just healed in his legs. He was restored to a life he had given up on. That is the kind of wholeness Jesus offers. Not just the symptom addressed, but the whole person restored. Do you want to get well? It is still the question. And our answer still matters.
Is there a long-standing wound or limitation in your life that you have built a story around, and what would it mean to hear Jesus ask you today whether you genuinely want to be made well?
PRAYER
Jesus, we hear Your question today. Do we want to get well? We want to say yes immediately, but we sit with it honestly first. There are ways we have grown comfortable with our brokenness, ways our identity has wrapped itself around what we have been through. Today we choose to want something different. We stop explaining, and we start receiving. Tell us to get up and walk. We will obey. Make us whole, not just in body but in identity, in story, in relationship with You. Amen.
