Daily Devotional: Worry & Fear, The Worry We Carry

This is an opinion column.

DO NOT BE AFRAID

“Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.”
1 Peter 5:7

REFLECTION

Most of us do not think of ourselves as worriers. We have other words for it.

  • We are planners.
  • We are responsible.
  • We are just being realistic.
  • We are preparing for the worst so we are not caught off guard.

But underneath the planning and the preparation and the responsible thinking, there is often a current of anxiety running that never fully turns off. It is there in the morning before the day gets started. It is there in the middle of the night when sleep will not come. It hums quietly beneath the surface of ordinary life, and most of us have simply learned to function around it rather than bring it to God.

Peter writes to people who had real reasons to be afraid. His readers were scattered, displaced, living under the threat of persecution. Their anxiety was not hypothetical. And yet his instruction cuts straight through the circumstances to something more fundamental: cast all your anxiety on him. Not some of it. Not the manageable pieces. All of it. The word cast is a word of deliberate action, like throwing something with intention. You have to pick it up and let it go.

The reason Peter gives is the one that changes everything: because he cares for you. Not because He is obligated to. Not because it is His job. Because He genuinely, personally, specifically cares. The God who holds the universe together is not too busy to hold what you are worried about. He is not dismissing your anxiety as small or unworthy of His attention. He is inviting you to bring it, all of it, and trust that it is safe in His hands.

This week we are going to spend time with the worry and fear that most of us carry but rarely name out loud. We begin simply, with the honest acknowledgment that we are carrying more than we were designed to carry alone, and with the invitation to finally set it down.

What is the anxiety you carry most consistently, the one that is always there beneath the surface, and what has kept you from fully casting it on God rather than continuing to manage it on your own?

PRAYER

Lord, we are more anxious than we usually admit. We have dressed it up in other names and managed it with busyness and planning, but the truth is that we are carrying things that were never meant to be ours to carry alone. Today we begin the practice of casting. We name what we have been holding and we release it to You, trusting not just in Your power but in Your care. You care for us. That is enough to start with. Amen.
