Road Closures Are Frustrating. In Winter Haven, They Also Mean Something Good Is Coming…eventually.

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. (June 9, 2026) — If you have hit a detour sign lately and found yourself adding ten minutes to a trip you have driven a hundred times, you are not alone. Road work has a way of making a familiar route feel like a maze. But the City of Winter Haven wants drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists to know that the inconvenience is the point. Something better is being built.

The city is currently managing multiple road and infrastructure projects in and around Winter Haven, including the closure of 3rd Street NW near several city offices, a disruption that city staff said they are navigating right alongside residents.

Katrina Hill, the city’s Director of Public Affairs and Communication, said the closures are a reminder that real investment is underway.

“Closures mean valuable infrastructure investments are underway,” Hill said. “It’s a temporary inconvenience in exchange for long-term investment.”

The city is asking for public cooperation in keeping that investment, and everyone around it, safe. Recently, drivers have bypassed road closed signs and ended up in ditches they could not see from the road. Pedestrians have walked through closed sections, putting themselves at risk. The city said it works to provide clear signage and station people at project borders when possible, but needs residents to do their part by following posted closure and detour signs.
