Daily Devotional: Forgiveness & Reconciliation: When You Need to Receive Forgiveness
This is an opinion column.
LET IT GO
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.
1 John 1:9
REFLECTION
We have spent most of this week talking about forgiving others. But for some of us, the harder direction is not outward. It is inward. We are not the ones who were wronged in the relationship that is most on our mind this week. We are the ones who did the wronging. Living on that side carries its own particular weight.
- The thing you said that you cannot take back.
- The choice you made that cost someone else more than you realized at the time.
- The person you hurt who may or may not have forgiven you.
- The version of yourself from a chapter you wish you could rewrite.
Guilt, when it is working the way it was designed, points us toward confession and repair. But guilt that has overstayed its welcome becomes something else. It becomes shame, and shame does not motivate repair. It paralyzes. It tells us we are too far gone, too defined by what we did, too beyond the reach of the forgiveness we would readily offer someone else in the same situation.
John’s promise is direct and unconditional. If we confess, He is faithful and to forgive. Not maybe. Not if the offense was small enough. Faithful and just, which means His forgiveness is not a reluctant concession. It is a reliable expression of who He is. The God who calls us to forgive others is the same God who forgives us completely when we come to Him with honest confession.
Receiving forgiveness is not the same as feeling forgiven. The feeling often comes later, sometimes much later. Receiving forgiveness is the act of believing what God says over what the shame says, choosing His verdict over the one our guilt keeps handing down. You are not too far gone. You are not the exception to His faithfulness. Confess it. Receive it. And begin the work of walking forward from it.
Is there something you have done that you have had difficulty bringing to God and fully receiving His forgiveness for, and what has shame been telling you about yourself that contradicts what His Word actually says?
PRAYER
Father, some of us come today not as the wronged but as the one who did the wronging. We carry guilt that has worn out its usefulness and become shame. We bring it to You now, honestly and specifically. We confess what we have done. We receive what You promise: faithful forgiveness, complete cleansing, a verdict that does not match the one shame keeps handing us. You are faithful. We receive Your faithfulness today. Help us to walk forward from this place rather than returning to it again. Amen.
