Polk County Road Closures Sept. 20-26: Which Roads Are Closed This Week in Winter Haven, Lakeland, Bartow and Lake Wales?
A southbound lane of U.S. 17 through Winter Haven is closed with no reopening time posted, the most disruptive of roughly three dozen work zones across Polk County during the week of Sunday, Sept. 20 through Saturday, Sept. 26. The Florida Department of Transportation reports that the southbound inside lane north and south of State Road 540, better known as Cypress Gardens Boulevard, is closed along with the inside westbound left turn lane from Cypress Gardens Boulevard onto southbound U.S. 17. Unlike every other closure on the list, that one carries no hours and no end date, so it cannot be planned around by time of day. Two roads close outright on Monday, Sept. 21: Dog Yard Road in Lake Wales and part of St. Augustine Court in Poinciana, and the Poinciana closure runs three weeks.
The listings that follow come with a caveat. The RoadWatch construction report FDOT District One had posted as of Friday morning covers Sept. 13 through 19, the week now ending, and the file itself was last updated Sept. 11. No report for the coming week had been published. The items below are limited to work whose stated end dates run past Sept. 19 and to long-term projects FDOT lists with no end date. Work scheduled for specific nights last week is not repeated as though it were scheduled for the week ahead. Drivers wanting same-day confirmation can reach FDOT District One at (863) 519-2828.
Interstate 4
The largest sustained work zone in the county is the Interstate 4 interchange at State Road 33, Exit 38 in north Lakeland, where crews are reconstructing the interchange and widening and resurfacing State Road 33. Single lane closures run nightly from 8:30 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. with no stated end date. Overnight detours of northbound and southbound State Road 33 at the interchange, from 9:30 p.m. to 6 a.m. for overhead bridge construction, were listed for Sept. 13 through 18, and the posted report does not establish whether they continue.
Crews are replacing the CSX railroad bridge near Exit 31, where the westbound on-ramp at Kathleen Road closes daily from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and nightly from 8:30 p.m. to 6:30 a.m., Monday through Friday. That pattern carries no end date. Between Galloway Road and U.S. 98, milling and resurfacing brings eastbound and westbound closures from 8:30 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. while pavement markings are placed.
U.S. 27
Southbound lanes at Live Oak Drive in Lake Wales close daily from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. through September while crews replace poles, a daytime closure on a commercial stretch that runs the full week. Between Cypress Gardens Boulevard and Hunters Glen, in the Waverly and Lake Wales area, crews building new turn lanes close lanes from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and again from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., with no end date listed.
At Holly Hill Road and Massee Road, milling and repaving closes the inside lanes northbound and southbound from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Sunday through Thursday nights. Between Ridgewood Lakes Boulevard and Holly Hill Road 2, drainage work and turn lane construction bring northbound and southbound closures from 7:30 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. on the same nights.
U.S. 98
Between State Road 60 and County Road 540A, repaving closes lanes from 6 p.m. to 5 a.m. Sunday through Thursday between State Road 60 and Bartow Regional Medical Center. Between north of West Socrum Loop Road and County Road 54, in the Lakeland and Kathleen area, U.S. 98 is being widened to a four-lane divided highway, with nighttime closures between West Socrum Loop Road and Rock Ridge Road from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. The specific nights listed were Sept. 13 through 17. The detail that holds regardless of which crews are working is the speed limit, which FDOT reports remains reduced to 45 mph throughout the project limits.
Between south of Griffin Road and Sharon Drive in Lakeland, periodic nighttime closures run in both directions, weather permitting, while crews finish punch list items. No hours and no end date are given.
U.S. 17 and U.S. 17/92
The open-ended Winter Haven closure sits on U.S. 17 from Snively Avenue and Lake Shipp Drive to north of State Road 540. In Bartow, U.S. 17 from north of Transport Road to Avenue G Southwest is being milled and resurfaced, with nighttime closures Monday through Friday while pavement markings are placed.
In Eagle Lake, at U.S. 17 and State Road 540, known there as Cameron Road, nighttime closures and traffic shifts continue while crews set up a barrier wall and begin radius construction and sidewalk work at the intersection. On U.S. 17/92 between Palmetto Street and Market Street, widening and turn lane work closes northbound and southbound lanes from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. through late September. At Powerline Road, drivers should be prepared to merge from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Lakeland
State Road 33, or Lakeland Hills Boulevard, between Parkview Place and Griffin Road is under reconstruction, milling and resurfacing, with traffic shifted onto the east side and closures both day and night. The posted speed limit through that work zone is 35 mph. The city describes the same work between Parkview Place and north of Granada Street and lists it as running into 2026, with an end date still to be determined.
On U.S. 92, or Memorial Boulevard, between Wabash Avenue and Gary Road, closures run on alternating nights from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. through Oct. 9. On State Road 37, or South Florida Avenue, between West Christina Boulevard and Shepard Road, southbound closures run from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. while crews extend the left turn lane. The city of Lakeland reports that sidewalk and bus stop pad replacement on South Central Avenue between Olive Street and West Walnut Street begins Monday, Sept. 21, and runs about a month, with a daily lane closure expected northbound. The city does not give hours for that closure.
Winter Haven and Auburndale
Beyond the U.S. 17 lane closure, striping work closes alternating lanes at night from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. on State Road 655 and State Road 620, together known as Recker Highway, and on State Road 559, or Berkley Road. Both are listed through Oct. 9. A traffic signal installation at State Road 544 and Old Lucerne Park Road brings periodic closures seven days a week, with completion listed for the fall.
On State Road 544, or Havendale Boulevard, between Lake Blue Drive and 26th Street Northwest, eastbound lanes close during the day. On State Road 540, or Winter Lake Road, at Thomas Wood Lane, roadway stabilization and paving close lanes from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. through the end of October.
Bartow and Southern Polk
Commuters coming north out of Fort Meade and Mulberry pass through several of these. On State Road 60 between Rifle Range Road and Alturas Road in Bartow, eastbound lanes close from 8 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. through early October for storm drainage work in the median. At the Fort Fraser Trail bridge over State Road 60, between Wilson Avenue and U.S. 17, no lane closures are scheduled, and the trail itself remains closed from the north trailhead just north of State Road 60 through the end of the trail on the south side.
On State Road 37, or Church Avenue, south of Fort Green Mine, closures run from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. for a safety striping refresh at the railroad crossing. Farther south on State Road 37, between County Road 630 and Fort Lonesome Road, TECO utility work has the shoulders closed. On South Frontage Road between Harden Boulevard and Old Road 37, a single lane closes from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. from Sept. 16 through Oct. 2 for new bus stop construction, covering every weekday of the week ahead.
Lake Wales, Poinciana and the Smaller Cities
The week’s two full road closures are both county work, and both start Monday, Sept. 21. In Lake Wales, Dog Yard Road shuts to through traffic at 7 a.m. for underground pipe installation and is expected to reopen at 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 25. The closed section begins roughly 330 feet west of the Dog Yard Road and Walk In Water Road intersection. Polk County is routing the detour along Walk In Water Road, State Road 60, Golden Bough Road, Flame Flower Lane, Kimbrel Road, Glen Saint Mary Road, and Dog Yard Road, a loop that adds meaningful distance for anyone living east of the closure. The work is part of a JDS Inc. project.
The longer of the two is in Poinciana, where the eastern portion of St. Augustine Court closes at 9 a.m. Monday, Sept. 21, for main water and sewer extension work and is not expected to reopen until 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 12, a stretch of three weeks. The closed section sits approximately 633 feet north of St. Cloud Road. The county did not publish a detour route for this one. The work is part of an Invertech Solutions LLC project, and the county notes that all dates and times are subject to change due to conditions in the field.
In Frostproof, sidewalk, curb and inlet repairs on State Road 17, or Scenic Highway, between West Fourth Street and Bulldog Way close lanes from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and again from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. through Oct. 30. In Polk City, a traffic signal installation at State Road 33 and Mount Olive Road brings periodic closures seven days a week, with completion listed for the fall, and final striping on State Road 33, or Commonwealth Avenue, closes lanes from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. In Lake Hamilton, a traffic signal installation at State Road 17 and Kokomo Road brings periodic closures seven days a week, also listed for completion in the fall.
Those two are the only closure notices Polk County government has posted covering any date in the week ahead, and both went out Friday, Sept. 18. The county’s previous closure post, on Old Eagle Lake Winter Haven Road, ran Sept. 10 through 15 and has ended. No municipal or event-driven closures were found for the window beyond those listed here.
Long-Term Projects
Construction on State Road 570B, the Central Polk Parkway, continues through 2029. Resurfacing on State Road 570, the Polk Parkway, is listed as continuing through mid-2026, a date that has now passed. The Interstate 4 interchange at State Road 33 and the CSX bridge replacement near Exit 31 continue alongside each other in north Lakeland, and together they account for the heaviest and longest-running disruption on the county’s busiest corridor.
The interchange work is the longer of the two. FDOT lists the project as rebuilding 4.3 miles of State Road 33 from Old Combee Road to north of Tomkow Road, converting it from two lanes to a four-lane divided urban roadway and reconstructing the interchange because the existing clearance of 14 feet 9 inches falls short of the required 16 feet 6 inches. The project also builds two wildlife crossings, an underpass about 1.8 miles north of the interchange and a 44-foot-wide bridge over Interstate 4 about 1.6 miles east of it. Construction began in early 2025 and is estimated for completion in early 2029.
