Daily Devotional: Marriage & Family: When Family Is Broken

This is an opinion column.

ROOTED

“He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.”
Psalm 147:3

REFLECTION

Not everyone reading this devotional today comes from a whole family. Not everyone is in one. For some people, the word family does not conjure warmth and belonging. It conjures pain.

  • The divorce that split everything in two and left everyone trying to navigate a new normal.
  • The parent who was absent in all the ways that mattered most.
  • The child who walked away and has not come back.
  • The marriage that ended in ways that still feel too raw to talk about in public.
  • The home that looked fine from the outside and was anything but on the inside.

Family brokenness is one of the most common and least spoken about sources of pain in the church. We celebrate marriages and baptisms and new babies, and we should. But sometimes the people sitting in the same rows are quietly carrying wounds from their families of origin that have never fully healed, or grieving a family dream that did not turn out the way they hoped, or raising children alone in circumstances they never planned for.

God is not surprised by broken families. He is not standing at a distance, disappointed that things did not work out the way He designed. He is the God who heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. That is not a general statement about God’s character. It is a specific promise to specific people who are hurting in specific ways. He sees the particular shape of your family’s brokenness, and He is not overwhelmed by it.

Jesus himself was born into a complicated family situation. He was raised by a stepfather. His family thought He had lost His mind at one point in His ministry. He knew family tension and misunderstanding from the inside. And He still managed to build around Himself a community of people who became, by His own description, His mother and brothers and sisters. He redefined family not to replace the biological one but to expand what family could mean for people whose biological families were not enough.

Whatever your family looks like today, whatever brokenness you are carrying from it or in it, you are not disqualified from the fullness of what God intended family to be. You are exactly the kind of person He came for. And healing, real and specific and personal healing, is available to you.

What is the specific family wound you have been carrying the longest, and what would it look like to bring that wound honestly to God today and trust Him with both the healing and the outcome?

PRAYER

Father, some of us come today with family pain that runs very deep. Divorces we are still grieving. Estrangements we do not know how to bridge. Wounds from childhood that show up in our adult lives in ways we did not expect. We bring them to You today, not with neat explanations or tidy resolutions, but honestly, as they are. You heal the brokenhearted. You bind up wounds. We trust You with the specific brokenness in our families that we have not been able to fix on our own. Do what only You can do. And remind us that no family is too broken for Your redemption. Amen.
