Daily Devotional: Marriage & Family: The Family God Had in Mind
This is an opinion column.
ROOTED
“So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.”
Genesis 1:27
REFLECTION
Family is the first thing God created after He created people. Before careers. Before ambitions. Before any of the structures and institutions that shape our lives. He looked at the man He had made and said: it is not good for him to be alone. And from that moment, the idea of family was woven into the fabric of what it means to be human.
• Family was not an afterthought.
• It was not a social construct invented over time.
• It was the first community God designed.
• The first place where human beings were meant to know and be known.
But most of us know that family is also one of the most complicated and sometimes painful parts of life. The people who are closest to us have the greatest capacity to hurt us. The relationships that are supposed to be our safest places can sometimes become our most difficult ones. And the gap between the family God had in mind and the family we actually experience can feel very wide on some days.
That gap is real, and it deserves to be acknowledged honestly. But it is not the end of the story. God did not design family and then walk away from it when it became broken. He entered into a family Himself. He was born to a mother and a father. He had brothers and sisters. He knew the complexity of family from the inside, not from a distance. And He spent His ministry pointing people back to what family was always meant to be: a place of covenant love, sacrificial commitment, and the kind of knowing that reflects the image of God Himself.
This week we explore what God had in mind when He created family, and what it looks like to build toward that in the real, imperfect, sometimes hard families we actually have. We begin not with a standard to feel guilty about but with a vision to reach toward, because knowing where we are going is the first step toward getting there.
What is the gap between the family you have and the family you believe God had in mind, and what is one area where you sense God inviting you to take a step toward closing that gap?
PRAYER
Father, You created family because You knew we were not made to be alone. You designed it as a place of love, safety, and belonging. We acknowledge today that our families do not always look the way You intended. There is brokenness, distance, hurt, and complexity in many of our homes. But we trust that You are not done with us. You entered into a family Yourself, and You know from experience what it costs and what it gives. Redeem what is broken in our families. Build what is missing. And help us to take one step today toward the family You had in mind. Amen.
