Daily Devotional: Generosity & Stewardship: The Cheerful Giver

This is an opinion column.

“Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” 2 Corinthians 9:7

REFLECTION

Reluctant giving is one of the most common and least acknowledged experiences in the church. We give because we feel we should. Because the offering plate is being passed. Because we said we would, and it would be embarrassing not to. Because the guilt of not giving is slightly more uncomfortable than the discomfort of giving. We give, but something inside us is holding back even while our hand is moving forward.

  • The gift given out of obligation carries a weight that cheerful giving does not.
  • It breeds resentment instead of joy.
  • It creates a transaction instead of an act of worship.
  • And it leaves the giver feeling depleted rather than alive.

Paul is not describing a feeling we manufacture before we give. He is describing a heart condition that giving flows from. The cheerful giver is not cheerful because giving is easy or because they have so much it does not cost them anything. They are cheerful because they have settled something about who they are and who God is. They have decided, in their heart, not under pressure, that this is what they want to do. And that decision, made freely and held firmly, produces a kind of joy that obligation-driven giving never touches.

Getting there is a process. Most of us are not naturally cheerful givers. We have to do the inner work of examining our beliefs about money and scarcity and security. We have to practice giving before it feels natural, trusting that the feeling often follows the habit. We have to return again and again to the truth that we give not to appease God but in response to a God who gave first, lavishly and without compulsion, at a cost we cannot fully comprehend.

When that truth gets deep enough, something shifts. The obligation lifts. The grip loosens. And giving becomes not a duty to endure but an expression of who we are becoming. That is the cheerful giver. And God, Paul says, loves that person. Not more than the reluctant giver, but in the particular way that a Father loves watching His child become free.

What is the honest state of your heart when it comes to giving right now, and what would need to shift in your beliefs about money, security, or God’s character for genuine cheerfulness in giving to become more natural for you?

PRAYER

Father, we want to be cheerful givers. Not people who give out of guilt or obligation or social pressure, but people who give because we have decided in our hearts that this is who we want to be. Do the inner work that producing that kind of giving requires. Challenge our beliefs about scarcity. Loosen our grip on security. Remind us that You gave first and You gave everything. Let our giving be a response to that, free and joyful and from the heart. Amen.
