Daily Devotional: Community & Fellowship, The Art of Showing Up

This is an opinion column.

BETTER TOGETHER

“Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.”
Galatians 6:2

REFLECTION

When someone you care about is going through something hard, most of us feel the pull to help and the paralysis of not knowing how.

  • We want to do something.
  • But we are afraid of saying the wrong thing.
  • Afraid of intruding.
  • Afraid of making it worse.

So we send a text that says we are thinking of them, we mean it sincerely, and then we wait for them to let us know if they need anything. And they seldom do, because people who are drowning rarely know how to ask for a life preserver.

Paul’s instruction to carry each other’s burdens is not primarily about knowing the right words. It is about presence. About showing up, physically, in the life of someone who is struggling, and staying long enough to actually be useful. Burden-bearing in practice looks like this:

  • The friend who comes over without being asked and simply sits with you in the hard thing.
  • The person who brings food not once but three times.
  • The one who calls back after a week when everyone else has moved on.

Burden-bearing is inconvenient by nature. Burdens do not arrive on schedule. They do not wait for a convenient moment. The person who needs carrying usually needs it on a Tuesday afternoon when your own life is full and you were not planning to have a conversation that goes until midnight. Learning to carry each other’s burdens means learning to rearrange. To let someone else’s need interrupt your agenda. To show up not when it is easy but when it is needed.

Think about a time when someone showed up for you in a way you did not expect and will never forget. They probably did not say anything remarkable. They just came. They stayed. They made it clear that you mattered enough to rearrange their day for. That is the law of Christ in action. That is the community God had in mind. And someone in your life right now needs you to be that person for them.

Who in your life right now is carrying something heavy, and what would it look like to move beyond a text or a prayer and actually show up for them in a tangible, inconvenient, specific way this week?

PRAYER

Father, make us people who show up. Not just in words but in presence, not just when it is convenient but when it is needed. Show us who around us is carrying something too heavy to carry alone. Give us the sensitivity to notice and the courage to act, to rearrange our schedules, to sit in the uncomfortable places, to stay longer than feels natural. Teach us the art of showing up the way You have always shown up for us. Amen.
