Daily Devotional: The Holy Spirit, You Are Not Doing This Alone

This is an opinion column.

BREATH OF HEAVEN

“But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.”
John 14:26

REFLECTION

There is a particular exhaustion that comes from trying to live the Christian life entirely in your own strength. You know the feeling. You are trying to be patient when everything in you wants to snap. You are trying to forgive someone who has not apologized and shows no signs of doing so. You are trying to hold on to faith in a season when faith feels thin. You are trying to be the person you know you are supposed to be, and it is taking everything you have, and some days it is still not enough. And you wonder quietly whether something is wrong with you.

Nothing is wrong with you. What is happening is that you are attempting to do in your own power what was never designed to be done in your own power. The Christian life, as Jesus described it, was never meant to be a solo effort fueled by willpower and good intentions. It was meant to be a life lived in active partnership with the Holy Spirit, the One sent specifically to be your helper in exactly the moments when helping is most needed.

He teaches. He reminds. When you are in a conversation that is going sideways, and you cannot find the right words, He is the One who can surface them. When you have forgotten what you believe in the middle of a crisis that is making it hard to think clearly, He is the One who brings it back. When you are in a situation that requires wisdom you do not have, He is not a distant resource you have to work to access. He is already present. Already with you. Already ready to help.

The question is not whether the Holy Spirit is available to help you today. He is. The question is whether you are aware of Him, whether you are turning to Him in the moment of need rather than straining through it alone. You are not doing this by yourself. You were never supposed to. That is worth remembering on a Monday morning when the week stretches out in front of you, and you are already wondering where the energy is going to come from.

In what area of your life are you most exhausted from trying to do in your own strength what was always meant to be done in partnership with the Holy Spirit, and what would it look like to genuinely invite His help into that specific place today?

PRAYER

Holy Spirit, we have been straining when we should have been leaning. We have been white-knuckling our way through things You were sent to help us with. Today we stop trying to do this alone. We invite You into the specific places where we are running low, where our patience is gone, where our wisdom is insufficient, where we have been trying to manufacture something only You can produce. Teach us. Remind us. Help us. We are not doing this alone anymore. Amen.
