Daily Devotional: Humility & Service: The Pride We Carry
TOWEL AND BASIN
“God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble. Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time.”
1 Peter 5:5-6
REFLECTION
Pride is one of the most difficult things to see in ourselves. It is not that we think we are better than everyone. It is quieter than that and more pervasive.
- It is the defensiveness that rises when someone offers feedback we did not ask for.
- It is the difficulty we have genuinely celebrating someone else’s success when we wanted what they got.
- It is the way we tell the story of a conflict so that we always come out looking reasonable.
- It is the resistance we feel when God asks us to do something that feels beneath us.
- It is the subtle belief that our way of doing things is just a little bit better than most people’s.
Peter says God opposes the proud. That is a strong word. Opposes. Not ignores, not gently discourages. Opposes. Which means pride does not just limit our relationships with other people. It puts us in a posture of resistance toward God Himself, and nothing good grows in that posture.
The remedy Peter offers is not self-flagellation or artificial lowering of ourselves. It is humbling ourselves under God’s mighty hand. That phrase under His mighty hand is not a picture of being crushed. It is a picture of being positioned. A potter works with clay under their hands, shaping it, forming it into something beautiful and useful. To humble ourselves under God’s hand is to become workable. To stop resisting the shaping. To trust that the One doing the work knows what He is making.
And then the promise: He will lift you up in due time. The lifting belongs to God, and it comes in His timing. Our job is the humbling. His job is the lifting. When we try to do the lifting ourselves, we get in the way of both. But when we genuinely yield, when we stop managing our own elevation, something becomes possible that we could never have arranged on our own.
Where do you most clearly see pride operating in your life right now, not the obvious kind but the quiet, subtle kind that is harder to name, and what would it look like to humble yourself specifically in that area this week?
PRAYER
Father, we ask You to show us our pride. Not to shame us but to free us. We know it is there in ways we cannot always see, in our defensiveness, our comparisons, our quiet belief that we know better. We humble ourselves under Your hand today. We stop trying to manage our own reputation and elevation. We trust You with the lifting, and we commit ourselves to the yielding. Shape us into something useful and beautiful. We are workable clay in Your hands. Amen.
