Daily Devotional: Humility & Service: Humility Is Not What You Think

TOWEL AND BASIN

“For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you.”
Romans 12:3

REFLECTION

Humility has an image problem. Most people, when they hear the word, picture someone who is self-deprecating, passive, unable to take a compliment, constantly minimizing their gifts and accomplishments. Someone who says things like: oh it was nothing; I am sure someone else could have done it better. That is not humility. That is insecurity wearing a spiritual costume.

  • Humility is not thinking less of yourself.
  • It is not pretending your gifts do not exist.
  • It is not the inability to receive praise or acknowledge your own contribution.
  • It is not weakness dressed up as virtue.

Paul defines it precisely: think of yourself with sober judgment. Sober. Clear-eyed. Accurate. Humility is an honest assessment of who you are, what you have been given, and where it all came from. It sees the gifts clearly and acknowledges them without pride, because it also sees clearly that they were given, not earned. That they belong to the Giver even while they are expressed through you.

The humble person is not the one in the corner apologizing for taking up space. The humble person is the one who knows exactly what they bring and offers it freely without needing the credit. They can lead without needing to be the loudest voice in the room. They can serve without needing it acknowledged. They can celebrate someone else’s success without feeling diminished by it. That kind of humility is not weakness. It is one of the rarest and most powerful things a person can carry.

True humility is liberating. When you are no longer managing your image, defending your reputation, or calculating your worth by comparison to others, you are free. Free to give everything you have without holding back for self-protection. Free to be exactly who God made you without the exhausting performance of being someone else. That is the life humility makes possible.

Where in your life are you confusing humility with insecurity or self-deprecation, and what would a genuinely sober and accurate assessment of your gifts and their source look like for you right now?

PRAYER

Father, give us a clear and honest view of ourselves. Not inflated, not deflated, but accurate. Help us to see our gifts without pride, because we know they came from You. Help us to acknowledge our limitations without shame, because You have never asked us to be more than we are. Free us from the exhausting performance of either overstating or understating who we are. Teach us the sober, settled, liberating humility that comes from knowing whose we are. Amen.
