Old Eagle Lake Road Closes Nightly Starting Sept. 10 for Utility Work

A portion of Old Eagle Lake Winter Haven Road in Eagle Lake closes nightly at 8 p.m. beginning tonight, Thursday, Sept. 10, for utility infrastructure improvement work.

The closure covers approximately 850 feet near SR-540. The roadway is expected to reopen at 6 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 15.

Traffic will be detoured on Old Eagle Lake Road, SR-540, SR-620 and Lake Shipp Drive South. Polk County is asking residents to plan alternate routes as needed.

Drivers using that detour should expect additional closures on SR-540 that could also impact your commute. The southbound inside lane of U.S. 17 near Cypress Gardens Boulevard, which is State Road 540, closed Wednesday, Sept. 9, and the Florida Department of Transportation says it will remain closed around the clock for approximately two weeks. The inside westbound left turn lane from Cypress Gardens Boulevard onto southbound U.S. 17 closes with it. Crews there are installing a drainage structure and building turn lanes for the entrance to the Target under construction at that intersection.

Nighttime closures on U.S. 17 and State Road 540 for the Thompson Nursery Road realignment have also been running 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., Sunday through Thursday. Anyone traveling through Eagle Lake and southern Winter Haven after dark over the next several nights should plan on all three.

Polk County notes that all dates and times are subject to change based on conditions in the field. Speeding fines are doubled in Florida work zones when workers are present.
