Daily Devotional: The Word of God: Nourished, Not Just Informed

This is an opinion column.

“Jesus answered, It is written: Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.”
Matthew 4:4

REFLECTION

Jesus said these words when He was hungry. Not metaphorically hungry, actually hungry, forty days in the wilderness without food, at the point where the temptation to turn stones into bread was as real as any temptation gets. And His response was to reach for Scripture, not as a theological argument but as a genuine source of sustenance. The Word of God was not a tool He used to win a debate. It was the thing that fed Him when everything else was stripped away.

We talk about feeding on God’s Word, but most of us engage with it more like we engage with a newspaper than like we engage with a meal. We scan it for relevant information. We look for what applies to our current situation. We read enough to feel like we have engaged with it and then move on. But there is a different way to approach it, a slower, more attentive way, where we are not just gathering information but genuinely receiving nourishment.

What does it look like to be nourished by Scripture rather than just informed by it? It usually involves slowing down. Reading less and sitting longer. Asking not just what this means but what this means for me, today, in what I am actually walking through. It involves bringing our real hunger to the text, our real questions, our real fears, our real longing for something that satisfies rather than just sustains. And then it involves waiting long enough to receive what is there.

You may have gone through seasons where Scripture felt dry, where you read it dutifully and got nothing from it. Most people who have walked with God for any length of time know what that feels like. But dryness in the reader does not mean the source has run dry. It usually means something in our approach needs to change. Come hungry today. Come with your actual need. The Word of God has never stopped being the kind of bread that satisfies.

What would it look like for you to approach Scripture this week less like a newspaper to scan and more like a meal to receive slowly, and what might you need to change about when, where, or how you read it to make that possible?

PRAYER

Lord, we want to be nourished, not just informed. We want to come to Your Word hungry and leave fed, not just checked out. Show us how to slow down with it. Teach us to bring our real selves to it, our actual hunger, our honest questions, our unpolished need. We believe that every word that comes from Your mouth is life. Feed us today with something that goes deeper than information. Nourish us from the inside out. Amen.
