The World Cup Is Down to Its Final Four, and Lake Wales Is Throwing a Party
Spain shut out France 2-0 today at Dallas Stadium to punch its first ticket to a World Cup final since 2010. England and Argentina, the defending champions, play their semifinal tomorrow at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. The two losers meet Saturday at 5 p.m. in the Bronze Final at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami. The two winners meet Sunday at 3 p.m. for the championship at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
It’s the first World Cup hosted across three countries at once, the United States, Canada and Mexico, and the first with 48 teams instead of 32. Getting here took some drama. Argentina needed a late comeback just to survive Egypt in the round of 32. Cape Verde, playing in its first-ever World Cup, kept winning far past anyone’s expectations before Argentina ended that run in extra time.

Lake Wales is marking the final weekend with its own big moment downtown. The city is setting up a massive digital screen in Market Plaza, in the heart of downtown Lake Wales, for two free watch parties, Saturday and Sunday, its first outdoor sports watch party of this kind. Bring lawn chairs, blankets, the family, and if you like, your leashed and well-behaved dog is also welcome. Food and drinks will be available for purchase, and it’s smart to arrive early for a good spot.
