Mindful Beauty: It’s Wash Day: Don’t Let the Dirt Get in Your Way
This is an opinion column.
There is a sacred rhythm to a wash day. It begins the moment you turn the dial and wait for the water to run warm. When you finally step under the stream, that first rush of water over your head is an instant release. It saturates your hair, heavy and grounding, immediately softening the hard edges of the day.
You pour the shampoo into your hands — thick, rich, and full of promise. As you rub your palms together, the crisp, clean scent of eucalyptus, mint, or citrus blooms into the air. It’s the smell of a fresh start. You press your hands into your hair, and the lather builds, turning into a soft, pillowy cloud.
Then comes the best part: the massage. Your fingertips find your scalp, moving in firm, deliberate circles. It releases the physical tension you didn’t even know you were holding behind your ears and at the base of your neck.
But as you scrub, remember this: wash day isn’t just for your hair. It’s for your head.
“Throughout the week, we accumulate a different kind of buildup — toxic thoughts, heavy criticisms, and doubts that wrap around our minds like layers of stubborn dirt. If we don’t wash them out, they weigh us down and dull our natural shine.”
Let the shampoo be a metaphor for truth. As you work the lather through your strands, imagine it breaking down every thought that isn’t edifying or encouraging. Every “I’m not enough,” every replay of an old argument, and every anxious worry about tomorrow is just surface dirt. It doesn’t belong to you. It’s just sitting on top of you.
Feel your fingertips gently but firmly breaking up that mental residue. You don’t have to carry it anymore.
When you tilt your head back to rinse, watch the water run down the drain. It carries the suds, the dirt, and the heavy, unhelpful thoughts right along with it. As the clean water cascades over your face, take a deep breath of that fresh, open space you just created.
“Your scalp is clean. Your hair is light. Your mind is clear. Don’t let the dirt of the world get in your way — you are ready to step out, completely renewed.”
