KNOWN: You Are Not Your Past

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!”
2 Corinthians 5:17

REFLECTION

There is a version of your story that ends with your worst moment. The thing you did that you cannot take back. The season you are most ashamed of. The person you were before you knew better, or before you cared enough to do better. Some of us have let that version of the story become the definitive one, the one we return to when we need to explain why we do not deserve good things, why we should not expect too much, why people would think differently of us if they really knew.

Paul does not minimize what the old life was. He simply says it is gone. Not covered over, not temporarily suspended, not waiting to resurface when you slip up again. Gone. And in its place, something genuinely new. The new creation Paul describes is not a cleaned-up version of the old you. It is not the same person with better habits and a church attendance record. It is a new creation, which means the defining story of your life is no longer the one that started with your worst chapter.

This does not mean your past did not happen or that it had no consequences. It means your past is no longer your identity. There is a difference between something that happened to you or through you, and something that defines you. In Christ, the thing that defines you is not what you came from. It is who you belong to. And who you belong to has made you new.

If you have been living under the weight of an old identity, one that says you are too far gone, too broken, too defined by what is behind you, today is a good day to put it down. The old has gone. You do not have to keep picking it back up. The new is here, not coming, not someday, here. You are not who you used to be. In Christ, you never have to be again.

QUESTION FOR REFLECTION

What part of your past are you still allowing to define you, and what would it look like to genuinely receive the truth that in Christ you are a new creation, not eventually, but right now?

TODAY’S PRAYER

Lord, we confess that we have let the old story speak too loudly for too long. We have dragged our past into our present and let it set the ceiling on what we believe is possible for us. Today we receive what Your Word says: the old has gone. The new is here. We are not who we were. We belong to You, and that changes everything about who we are now. Help us to live from that truth rather than just knowing it. Amen.
